Policy Design and Implementation
This research program seeks to draw lessons about public policy processes from studying the design and implementation of public policies. Under the direction of Professor Peter May, research projects have been carried out concerning policies addressing homeland security, public risks, regulatory issues, and social policies. Research about these topics has provided new understandings of the role of policy disruptions in affecting policy change, the interplay of issues and interests in affecting policymaking, the coherence of policies, and factors that facilitate and inhibit policy learning. Projects have been funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Danish Environmental Research Program.
Current Research Projects:
- Homeland Security and Public Risks
With funding from the National Science Foundation's Human-Systems Dynamics Program, Center researchers are collaborating with researchers at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in studying different aspects of policy disruption as it relates to the threat of terrorism and other extreme events.
- Regulatory Design and Implementation
Recognizing the limits of traditional regulatory approaches to achieving regulatory goals, a number of alternative approaches to the design and enforcement of regulatory policies have evolved in recent years. With funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. National Science Foundation, a variety of research projects have been undertaken that address these issues.
- Social and Other Policy Considerations
The main emphases of research concerning social and other policies by Center researchers have addressed the coherence of policies and various aspects of the implementation of policies.
